"ago"'s meaning

Main Post:

I saw the comment 'I wish I was the same person 30 seconds ago' in some video

I know 'ago' as before as much as some time. But the time before watching the video? I don't think it makes sense. Does this 'ago' mean "the 30 second part of this video"?

Top Comment: “Ago” means “before the present; earlier.” “I wish I was the same person [I was] 30 seconds [before the present moment].” i.e. watching this video has changed me and I wish to go back to being the person I was before. “30 seconds” isn’t necessarily being used as a strictly literal measurement of time here, it’s somewhat figurative, it doesn’t matter much if the video’s length does not exactly match that timeline.

Wtf are people doing at the AGO

Main Post:

Every time I walked passed the AGO on my way to class there are people either entering or exiting the building dressed like they’re attending a fancy party or event. What goes on in there every day??

Top Comment: The AGO constantly holds events of all kinds, the rooms in there are gorgeous so it makes sense to hold parties, fundraisers and other events there. There's also a lot of people who just dress well and like art. And then there's the OCAD people who are artists and will frequently dress extremely interesting. So, roll the dice and it's probably one of those.

Help me plan a fun date at AGO

Main Post:

Hi guys

I am going to Art Gallery of Ontario coming Saturay for a date.

  1. I have a TPL Museum + Arts pass. Is that enough to guarantee me entry without waiting in the line?
  2. Does 1 TPL Museum + Arts pass allow 2 adults?
  3. Can I access all spaces using this TPL pass? Is there any other nice place in anyones opinion in AGO where slots needs to be booked beforehand?

4. Is 1 day enough to cover all of AGO? My date's suggesting we go there at 1PM but I need to convince her that 4.5 hours is not enough to cover all of AGO, and that people take days to cover all of it.

5. What about lunch? I heard there's a good Bistro there. Is the food good? Do I need to book slots in it? How about vegan food?

6. Someone on Google reviews said we need to book a timeslot for Yoyoi Kasuma Infinity Mirrored Room. How do I do that? Is it through their website or do I need to call them?

7. Any other interesting place within AGO that needs booking a time slot?

8. Do Permanent Collection and Leonord Cohen exhibit need booking timeslot?

If there's something else fun and exciting that can be done at AGO, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Top Comment: So many of your questions could easily be answered just by going to the AGO’s website. Kusama and special exhibits like the Leonard Cohen exhibit are usually timed admission, so you will have to pre-book. Leonard Cohen is a ticketed exhibit for non-members. $25 adult admission for the day. Do not try to take in the entire galley in one trip. Find a few areas you and your date are interested in seeing, and take your time. Remember, you’re on a date. The art is just a backdrop for spending time with the person you’re there with. Your date should be your focus. If you want to make a good impression, do a bit of reading about some of the artists or collections before you go. It will make the visit more interesting for you, and will also give you more to talk about.

Is the AGO going to be closed all week?

Main Post:

Hiya, first time visitor to your lovely city and really enjoying it! I wanted to go to the AGO while I’m here, but see it’s closed. However, their website also seems to allow booking tickets for Wednesday the 10th. Does this mean they expect the strike to be over / to be open to visitors on Wednesday? Or that they plan to be open but still being picketed? Or is it likely they’ll be closed and are still just trying to get ticket revenue?

Thanks!

I'm not sure what their current situation is, but I believe the workers are on strike.

ROM or AGO - which is bigger?

Main Post:

Hi all,

I'll be visiting Toronto next week, and I'm trying to schedule my itinerary.

Which is "bigger", in the sense they would take longer to explore: The Royal Ontario Museum or the Art Gallery of Ontario?

Is it possible to visit both in the same day? If not, how long is the experience in both? I've been to the ROM last year, and I saw quite a bit in around 3 hours, though sadly I couldn't see the whole museum. I've never been to the AGO.

In an ideal world, I'd like to see the ROM exhibits I missed (and the new temporary ones!) and then spend the day at the AGO -- would that be enough to do in say, 7 hours?

Otherwise, if I were to split them up into two days, which should I go on a more "free" day, and which can I go to if I can spare a few hours?

Sorry for the ramble, I'm a bit manic when it comes to schedule planning!

Top Comment: Assuming your interests in art and history are the same, the ROM is bigger and has more to see. You could do both in the same day, especially if you've seen much of the ROM previously.

I was curious how far I'd walk during a visit to the AGO, so I turned on my app as I left St. Patrick station and turned it off when I got back there. In less than an hour wandering around the gallery, I walked 2.9 km. It was my first visit in a few years, and it felt good to be back.

Over 400 AGO workers to strike on Tuesday, gallery closed

Main Post: Over 400 AGO workers to strike on Tuesday, gallery closed

Top Comment: "The labour dispute comes amid challenging financial times for the AGO, one of North America’s most prominent art museums. The AGO has not seen its attendance return to pre-pandemic levels and is currently dealing with a deficit believed to be around $1 million." Though accurate, this portrayal suggests that the union is negotiating with a financially bereft institution. In 2023, alongside the CEO's salary exceeding $400,000 listed on the Sun Shine List, he received over $300,000 for his 'consulting work' with the AGO Foundation. Moreover, leadership across the board experienced pay raises, with one seeing a remarkable 59% increase.

Art Gallery Of Ontario Strike

Main Post:

I hope it's not inappropriate to post this here. If so, I'll remove it, unless the mods do first.

I work at the Art Gallery of Ontario, where our union is on strike over a lack of fair wages, contracting out of work, eliminating full-time jobs and downloading the work to part-timers, increased workloads, reduced hours, and general disrespect. Many of us have worked there for a long time and have had enough of being treated like we're disposable. Our CEO earns a base salary of $406,000 annually plus bonuses of almost as much. Management have given themselves large raises every year while we're still struggling to get out from under Doug Ford's 1% mandate. There are 69 managers on the Sunshine List, with a combined total of $10 million in salaries. All of them have had substantial raises every year, and in one case 59% last year alone. This is all while the AGO is running at a $4 million deficit, which they use as justification for not increasing our wages, while on the cusp of launching a $100 million expansion that will be larger than the entire Whitney Museum in New York, without hiring any additional staff, and claiming they have no money. Many of us can barely pay rent. Some of us need to rely on food banks.

For additional context, the entire First Nations curatorial department recently exited by "mutual decision" after comments were made by Wanda Nanibush, the internationally renowned Senior First Nations curator, on social media in support of the Palestinian people. Truth and reconciliation are words that seem to have no significance in practice yet are frequently touted as examples of commitment to social justice.

One of the things the union was asking for in negotiations was to establish a "Joint Gender Affirmation Committee". I don't know any details about what that would involve, but AGO management rejected it on the grounds that it would expose them to "human rights complaints" (whatever that means - sounds suspiciously MAGA-like to me). They countered with a one-time "donation" of $2000 to be shared among all 430 union members, and yet they claim to be leading the way in terms of diversity and inclusion.

We're not just striking for ourselves. This is gaining a lot of attention because of the prominence of the institution, and could have an impact on future employment negotiations and standards in Ontario and nationwide. Management is refusing to negotiate, and trying to break our spirits by spreading lies that we declined a mediation meeting and that they respect the bargaining process.
